The following patterns are just suggestions, you may use any pattern you like.

REMEMBER: SCARVES MUST BE MADE FROM WOOL OR COTTON. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF THE SCARF CATCHING ON FIRE. (PLASTIC STICKS TO SKIN, WOOL OR COTTON DOES NOT.)

Crochet Scarf Pattern

Use either a G or H hook depending on your style. (Mary Sue is using the H hook when working cotton.) 4 ply took 2 skeins.
Chain 156 sts, turn
1: 1 SC in 2nd St from the hook, 1 SC in each remaining St, turn
The entire scarf is worked in the back sts only.
2: ch 1, 1 SC in each St, turn
3-24 (or as many rows as it takes to to make the scarf 6" or 7" wide): repeat row 2.The finished scarf should be at least 4 foot long and not more than 6 foot long.
Finish by doing 1 row of sl sts loosely along the edge of the last row.

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Knitted Scarf Pattern

Yarn - Cotton or Wool
#10 needles
 
Cast on 28 stitches.
Row 1: (K 4sts, P 4 sts) to end of row.
Row 2: (P 4 sts, K 4 sts) to end of row
 
Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 (4) more times
 
Row 11: (P 4 sts, K 4 sts) to end of row.
Row 12: (K 4 sts, P 4 sts) to end of row.
 
Repeat Row 11 and Row 12 (4) more times.
 
Continue in pattern until scarf is about 5 feet
long, ending with Row 12.
 
Bind off in pattern.
Weave in ends.
